Google Unveils Gemini Embedding 2: Multimodal AI Model Promises 70% Latency Reduction and Cost Savings for Enterprises

Google has announced the public preview of Gemini Embedding 2, a significant advancement in AI embedding models. Unlike previous models limited to text, Gemini Embedding 2 natively integrates various media types including text, images, video, audio, and documents into a unified numerical space. This multimodal capability is designed to reduce latency by up to 70% for some users and lower overall costs for enterprises utilizing AI models powered by their own data. Sam Witteveen, co-founder of Red Dragon AI, provided early impressions of the new model. The announcement highlights how embedding models organize information by 'ideas' rather than traditional metadata, converting complex data into numerical vectors to represent semantic similarity.

Yesterday, Google introduced a major update for enterprise customers: the public preview availability of Gemini Embedding 2. This new embeddings model represents a significant evolution in how machines represent and retrieve information across diverse media types. While earlier embedding models were largely restricted to text, Gemini Embedding 2 natively integrates text, images, video, audio, and documents into a single numerical space. This integration is expected to reduce latency by as much as 70% for some customers and decrease the total cost for enterprises that leverage AI models powered by their own data to accomplish business tasks.

Sam Witteveen, co-founder of AI and ML training company Red Dragon AI and a VentureBeat collaborator, was granted early access to Gemini Embedding 2. He subsequently published a video on YouTube sharing his impressions of the model.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of "embeddings" in AI, a useful analogy is that of a universal library. In a traditional library, books are organized by metadata such as author, title, or genre. In the "embedding space" of an AI, however, information is organized by ideas. Imagine a library where books are not categorized by the Dewey Decimal System but by their "vibe" or "essence." In such a library, a biography of Steve Jobs might be found next to a technical manual for a Macintosh, and a poem about a sunset could drift toward a photography book of the Pacific Coast. All thematically similar content would be organized in beautiful, hovering "clouds" of books. This analogy illustrates the fundamental function of an embedding model.

An embedding model takes complex data—whether it's a sentence, a photograph of a sunset, or a snippet from a podcast—and transforms it into a long list of numbers known as a vector. These numbers serve as coordinates within a high-dimensional map. If two items are "semantically" similar, they will be positioned closer together in this embedding space.
