Anthropic Enhances Claude AI with Shared Context Across Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for Seamless Enterprise Workflows
Anthropic has upgraded its Claude AI model with new capabilities for Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, now available to Mac and Windows users on paid Claude plans as of March 11. This strategic enhancement aims to expand Anthropic's enterprise presence and offers a potential challenge to Microsoft's Copilot Cowork. A key feature is the beta experience enabling shared context between Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint, eliminating the need for manual copy-pasting of conversation history, instructions, and task information. This allows for continuous sessions, such as extracting data from Excel and immediately applying it to a PowerPoint slide. Enterprises can now deploy these tools through a Claude account or existing LLM gateways routing to Claude models on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry, offering greater flexibility within their cloud and compliance setups. This builds upon the October 2025 release of a Claude plugin for Excel and introduces 'Skills' for repeatable workflows within applications.
Anthropic has rolled out significant upgrades to its Claude AI model, introducing new functionalities specifically designed for Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. This strategic move, effective March 11, is aimed at bolstering Anthropic's enterprise footprint and could position it as a competitor to Microsoft’s recently launched Copilot Cowork, which Claude itself partially powers. The enhanced add-ins are now accessible to users with paid Claude plans on both Mac and Windows platforms.
Anthropic is also expanding the deployment options for enterprises. Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint can now be utilized either directly through a Claude account or via an existing Large Language Model (LLM) gateway that routes to Claude models on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry. This provides organizations with increased flexibility to integrate the add-ins within their existing cloud infrastructures and compliance frameworks.
A notable new beta experience, available from March 11 for paid Claude users on Mac and Windows, introduces shared context across Office applications. This feature allows Claude for Excel and Claude for PowerPoint to share the complete context of a user’s conversation with the AI model between the two applications. This eliminates the need for users to manually copy and paste information, instructions, or task history, enabling a continuous session between an open spreadsheet and an open presentation.
For instance, Claude can now write formulas to extract data from an Excel workbook and immediately apply that information to a stylized PowerPoint slide within the same ongoing session. Anthropic highlighted a practical example in a press release: "a financial analyst can ask Claude to pull comparable company financials from an open workbook, build out a trading comps table in Excel, drop the valuation summary into the pitch deck, and draft the email to the MD—without switching tabs or re-explaining the dataset at each step." This new capability builds upon Anthropic’s previous release of a Claude plugin for Excel in October 2025.
Another central aspect of this launch is the introduction of 'Skills,' which empowers teams to create and save repeatable workflows directly within Excel, streamlining recurring tasks and enhancing productivity.
