Alibaba Launches 'Qianwen' App for Public Beta, Leveraging Qwen3 to Challenge ChatGPT in the AI-to-Consumer Market with Free Access and Ecosystem Integration

On November 17th, Alibaba officially launched the public beta of its 'Qianwen' app, marking its full entry into the AI-to-C market. Based on the globally top-performing open-source model Qwen3, Qianwen aims to compete directly with ChatGPT by offering free access and integrating with various lifestyle scenarios. Alibaba's core management views this project as the 'future battle of the AI era.' The app is now available on major app stores, with web and PC versions also provided. An international version is slated for release soon to leverage Qwen's global influence and compete for overseas users. Alibaba has invested 380 billion yuan in AI infrastructure this year and plans to expand cloud data center energy consumption tenfold by 2032. Qwen has become the most powerful and widely used open-source large model globally, with over 600 million downloads. Its flagship model, Qwen3-Max, reportedly surpasses GPT5 and Claude Opus4 in performance, positioning it among the top three globally. Qianwen's strategic goal is to become a future AI lifestyle portal, offering smart chat and practical task-handling capabilities, such as generating research reports and PPTs. Alibaba plans to integrate various life scenarios like maps, food delivery, ticketing, and shopping into the app.

On November 17th, Alibaba officially announced the 'Qianwen' project, signaling its full commitment to the AI-to-Consumer (AI to C) market. On the same day, the public beta version of the Qianwen app was launched. Built upon the Qwen3, which is described as the world's top-performing open-source model, Qianwen aims to compete comprehensively with ChatGPT by offering free access and integrating with various lifestyle ecosystems. Alibaba's core management views the 'Qianwen' project as the 'future battle of the AI era.'

The Qianwen app's public beta version is now available on major app stores, with synchronous web and PC versions also provided. An international version of the Qianwen app, targeting the global market, is expected to launch soon. This international version will leverage the overseas influence of the Qwen model to directly compete with ChatGPT for international users.

Earlier this year in February, Alibaba announced an investment of 380 billion yuan in AI infrastructure construction. The company has also set a long-term goal to expand the energy consumption scale of its cloud data centers tenfold by 2032.

Since its comprehensive open-sourcing in 2023, Alibaba's Qwen has reportedly surpassed models like Llama and Deepseek, becoming the most powerful and widely used open-source large model globally. As of now, the Qwen series models have achieved over 600 million global downloads, accumulating a high industry reputation. Recently, Alibaba released its flagship model, Qwen3-Max, which is stated to outperform international competitors such as GPT5 and Claude Opus4, placing it among the top three globally. Qwen is rapidly gaining market share in Silicon Valley.

Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb, has publicly stated that his company is "heavily relying on Qwen" due to its superior speed and performance compared to OpenAI models. Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, has indicated that Qwen already holds a significant portion of the global open-source model market and continues to expand its share. Alibaba's open-source Qwen model is becoming a foundational element in Silicon Valley.

Alibaba's management believes that AI development will progress through three stages: "learning from humans," "assisting humans," and "surpassing humans." Currently, the capabilities of large models have entered the "Agentic AI era" of "assisting humans," and Alibaba believes the timing is ripe for its significant entry into the consumer market.

Alibaba stated that the newly released Qianwen app is an initial version, designed to be a "personal AI assistant that can chat and get things done" using the most advanced models. Beyond intelligent conversation, the ability to "get things done" will be a key focus for the Qianwen app. The strategic goal of the Qianwen app is to become the future portal for AI-powered living. Qianwen has already demonstrated some task-handling capabilities; for instance, it can complete a research report and generate a multi-page PPT in seconds with a single command. Recently, Qianwen won a real-world investment competition against other top global models including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok. Alibaba reportedly plans to integrate various lifestyle scenarios such as maps, food delivery, ticketing, office work, learning, shopping, and health into the Qianwen app to enhance its task-handling capabilities.
